When our parent company KaidCo was working with a client in 2020 to develop a coffee shop in his downtown Vancouver office building, also home to our KaidCo office – we discovered that in our building alone – made up of 2,000 people, more than 445 coffee cups were going in to landfill each day.
On a deeper dive, we uncovered that more than 600 billion disposable coffee cups are produced worldwide each year & only 0.25% of those are actually recycled (a startling 99.75% go in to landfill).
Needless to say, we saw this as a problem & moved to create Vancouver’s first zero single use plastics & paper cup free coffee shop on our clients behalf.
To sustain our vision, the building also moved to fit out the entire building with a reusable, closed loop cup program - the first in North America. When we began the search for a travel cup that met all of our criteria – a beautiful design, sustainable with an ethical supply chain & ergonomics suitable for an operating coffee shop that could be rolled out at scale for an entire building, we quickly realized the gap in the market.
Recognizing the wider universal problem for the hospitality industry & world at large, we began working with a number of local artisans & product designers to prototype a reusable cup & program that was aligned with our vision. Currently The Shop Next Door orders are only available to guests with an existing booking reference number. All orders will be delivered to your suite prior to arrival.
